the weird fake columns (?) painted directly on the walls and closet door in the front entryway of brandon & philip’s swanky one-bedroom apartment are so horribly distractingly Bad but i guess it just goes to show that even rich society gays are in no way exempt from having fucking atrocious taste. i hate these things so much. and having them go over the closet door too? unforgivable. rupert should’ve mentioned this rancid décor choice as one of brandon’s worst sins in his impassioned final monologue
its so interesting to learn about how what’s considered gay coding and subtext has evolved in hollywood movies over the decades. when i watch Rope (1948) now i’m like. “yeah this movie is pretty gay but its still only hinted at” meanwhile everyone working on the movie at the time was like “the gayness of this movie is Very Obvious and None Of Us Are Allowed To Talk About It Directly or else all of our careers are over.” except jimmy stewart of course who knew nothing and just wanted to be in the fun murder movie
nobody talks about how in rope 1948 brandon and philip throw the dinner party under the pretense that they’re giving an old guy some books. why don’t more dinner parties have that theme.
